On the morning of 10 March 2026, I was present at the Broadhurst Magistrate’s Court in Gaborone in my capacity as a journalist to cover court proceedings involving a rape suspect, Kabelo Sekocha. The court session concluded during the morning hours, after which members of the media remained outside the court premises to document developments related to the case.
A number of journalists, including myself, had gathered near the court building as the accused exited the premises under escort. Shortly after leaving the court building, the accused became aggressive and hostile towards members of the media present at the scene. He began picking up bricks from the ground and threw them in the direction of the journalists.
The accused then advanced towards the group while continuing to throw the bricks, which appeared to be a direct attack on members of the media who were present to report on the case. This unexpected and violent behaviour caused panic among the journalists gathered outside the court.
In an attempt to avoid being struck by the bricks, journalists ran from the scene to seek safety. While fleeing the area, I fell to the ground and sustained injuries on my palm and elbows as a result of the fall.
The incident caused significant distress and posed a serious safety risk to members of the media who were carrying out their professional duties at the court premises.
