Economic pressureArrest and Detention

New development in the Madiambal Diagne case. The journalist's wife, Bineta Diaby, has been transferred to the Special Pavilion. The latter was arrested and remanded in custody last September, along with two of her husband's sons and a friend. They are being prosecuted for fraud involving public funds, criminal conspiracy and money laundering. Enquête, which reported the news in its Monday edition, states that Bineta Diaby's transfer took place this Sunday. The newspaper does not provide further details, however. Madiambal Diagne's wife is the manager of SCI Pharaon, the company that allegedly received suspicious payments in connection with the execution of a contract valued at 21 billion CFA francs. The journalist disputes the accusations, insisting that the amounts received were legitimate. Madiambal Diagne is currently in France. Despite an order to leave the country issued by the Senegalese justice system to justify the pursuit he is subject to—he claims he never received it—he managed to leave the country. In a social media post, he justified his escape by the need to prepare his defense, promising to be willing to surrender in order to take responsibility. Diagne was arrested less than a week ago in France in connection with the execution of an international arrest warrant issued by Senegal. He will be questioned and placed under judicial supervision, pending the decision of the Versailles Court of Appeal on Tuesday, October 28, on the extradition request submitted by Dakar.
