Cameroonian journalist Mimi Mefo came under intense cyberbullying on Facebook after she made political remarks criticizing the effectiveness of lockdowns in the North-West and South-West regions. In her post, Mefo argued that while some activists claim to resist President Paul Biya’s regime, they end up declaring lockdowns that prohibit schools and elections. She noted that the North-West has 684,598 registered voters and the South-West 437,236, adding up to more than 1.1 million people whose votes could influence the upcoming election. According to her, lockdowns only weaken the opposition, while the ruling CPDM remains unaffected due to its control of state security and electoral networks. Mefo stressed that past lockdowns in 2018 and 2020 ultimately handed easy victories to Biya and his party. Her remarks, however, triggered a wave of harassment, insults, and hostile comments on Facebook, with many users attacking her personally rather than engaging with her arguments.
