Physical violence

On Saturday, 18th May , 2024, two female journalists in the greater Masaka sub-region filed complaints with the police accusing the bodyguards of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) of assault and equipment damage while they were covering an event in Lwengo district. Zainabu Namusaazi from Next Media Group and Margret Kayondo of Radio Ssimba allege the guards attacked them during a burial ceremony, damaging a video camera, a smartphone, and inflicting physical injuries. Namusaazi claimed the guards, led by Achilles Kivumbi, targeted journalists attempting to document a confrontation where MP Abed Bwanika criticized Kyagulanyi’s leadership. Kayondo, who sustained injuries after being accused of filming without permission, recounted being beaten by bouncers in red overalls before bystanders intervened.
